The Importance of Mental Strength in Olympic Athletes

August Newsletter

How are you guys enjoying the Olympics so far?! Have you ever thought about the immense mental strength required of these phenomenal athletes?! As athletes push the boundaries of human performance, mental resilience becomes a cornerstone of their training. Hear what some famous Olympians have to say about the significance of mental performance coaching.

Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, has often credited his mental training for his success in the pool. Phelps used visualization techniques to prepare for his races, imagining every possible scenario and his response to it. He said, “Visualization is a key part of my training. I see myself breaking records and winning gold medals before they happen."

Simone Biles

Simone Biles, widely regarded as the greatest gymnast of all time, has been open about her struggles with mental health and the importance of mental well-being. In the lead-up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Biles prioritized her mental health, ultimately withdrawing from several events. She stated, “It’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay to take a break. Mental health is just as important as physical health. You can’t neglect one without neglecting the other.”

Katie Ledecky

Swimming sensation Katie Ledecky emphasizes the role of mental preparation and confidence. She works extensively with sports psychologists to enhance her focus and maintain a positive mindset. Ledecky has shared, “Each day I work on getting better, and even the bad days have something good that comes out of them. One thing my coaches say is that I fail spectacularly in practice —and that’s something that I actually work toward.”

The insights from these elite athletes highlight the critical role of mental strength in sports. Mental performance is an integral part of training regimens, helping athletes navigate the pressures of competition and achieve their highest potential.

ATTENTION GYMNASTS & DANCERS

For dancers & gymnasts who are committed to achieving their goals, mastering mental skills such as cognitive reframing, relaxation exercises, emotion control, visualization, and empowering self-talk is not just beneficial - its CRITICAL.

Our online training programs teach the same mental skills that are taught during one-on-one sessions in a step-by-step format. They walk the athlete through the learning and practicing of the skills, how to implement the skills in practice, class, rehearsal, competition, etc., how to piece together a pre-performance routine for peak performance, and so much more!

These online training programs are available on their own for those who wish to work independently, as well as in bundles for those who prefer to add one-on-one coaching sessions! Athletes receive lifetime access to the program and can review skills whenever they need. These all-inclusive bundles are our most cost-effective & convenient options for gymnasts and dancers who wish to begin mental performance coaching. For more info, you can click on either of the logos above or the button below.

Quick Reminders

Scheduling:

Please remember that you are responsible for scheduling your child's coaching sessions. Sessions can be scheduled via the online portal.

Online Portal:

The online portal is where you will be able to schedule sessions and download/share documents as needed. Please bookmark this link (you can also find in on the CMC website): https://championmindsetconsulting.clientsecure.me/

You can also download the free app (for iPhones AND for Androids) for even easier access to scheduling.

Cancellation Policy:

I don't experience late cancellations often (and for that I am very grateful to you all!), but every once in a while it does happen. Because this takes away a spot from other athletes who would've liked to get in, we will be enforcing the cancellation policy which states that any session cancelled less than 24 hours ahead of time is subject to a $25 fee. I completely understand that sometimes things happen that are beyond your control, so in these situations please reach out.

Waiting/Cancellation List:

If you are trying to schedule your athlete and the day/time you want is taken, please reach out to me and I will put you on a cancellation list for that particular day/time. If a cancellation occurs, I will contact you first to see if you'd still like that spot!
